EMILYs List Endorses Pat Timmons-Goodson for North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District
Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed former Justice Pat Timmons-Goodson for Congress in North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“EMILYs List is proud to endorse Pat Timmons-Goodson to represent North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District. Pat is a fearless leader whose achievements comprise a long series of firsts, including becoming the first African American woman to serve as an associate justice on North Carolina’s Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, and as district court judge of the 12th Judicial District of North Carolina. Throughout her career, Pat has worked to elevate others’ voices and empower women and marginalized communities – and that’s exactly why she’s running for Congress, where she will work to ensure everyone has a fair shot to succeed. EMILYs List is confident that Pat will be a strong advocate for North Carolina’s women and working families, and we are proud to stand with her.”
Pat Timmons-Goodson is a civil rights leader and former North Carolina Supreme Court justice running for Congress to continue her outstanding career of public service. Pat grew up as the eldest of six children in a military family, and her parents taught her the value of education. She earned her undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master of law from Duke University School of Law. At the age of 29, Pat became the first African American woman to serve as district court judge in the 12th judicial district of North Carolina. In 2006, Pat became the first African American woman to serve on the Supreme Court of North Carolina. She stepped down from the Supreme Court in 2012 and was appointed to the United States Commission on Civil Rights in 2014. Pat and her husband, Dr. Ernest Goodson, are proud parents of two adult sons. Pat and Dr. Goodson reside in Fayetteville, where they are active members of First Baptist Church, Moore Street.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 50,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
