EMILYs List Endorses Jana Lynne Sanchez in Texas’ 6th District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Jana Lynne Sanchez for Congress in Texas’ 6th Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Jana Lynne Sanchez was raised in Texas and cares deeply about improving opportunities available for working families. As the granddaughter of migrant farm workers and the daughter of a Marine, Jana’s background and life experiences have shaped her values and priorities. She knows how important public education and affordable health care are, and in Congress, she will be the vocal advocate that 6th District families have long lacked after years of Republican representation.
“Jana is running to fill the seat of Congressman Joe Barton, who is retiring in disgrace. Her opponent, Ron Wright, is a Republican extremist who has already pledged to join the obstructionist Freedom Caucus if he wins. Families in the district deserve much better. Jana will bring new leadership and a fresh perspective to Congress, and we cannot pass up the opportunity to flip this seat from red to blue. Jana is a champion for working families and EMILYs List is proud to stand with her to win this race.”
The granddaughter of migrant farmworkers and the daughter of a Marine, Jana Lynne Sanchez attended Ellis County public schools. With scholarships, financial aid, student loans, work-study jobs, and the support of her family, Jana earned her bachelor’s degree from Rice University. She has worked as a fundraiser, a journalist and foreign correspondent, and she served as founding director of a financial and corporate communications consulting firm. She serves on the Dean’s Advisory Board for the School of Social Sciences at Rice. Jana is running for office for the first time to bring new leadership to her community and to give working families a fair shot.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
