EMILYs List Endorses Jackie Gordon in New York’s 2nd Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Jackie Gordon for Congress in New York’s 2nd Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“In Congress, Jackie Gordon plans to build on her record of service by being a voice for New York families and veterans. Her top priorities include affordable health care, public education, and expanding economic opportunity and EMILY's List is proud to endorse her. Jackie is a combat veteran and educator who has dedicated her career to public service. She spent nearly three decades in the Army Reserve where she served as a platoon leader in Germany during Operation Desert Storm and later U.S. missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. During this time, she also worked as a guidance counselor and has served on the Babylon Town Council as a vocal advocate for veterans and military families.
“Jackie is running against Republican Congressman Peter King, who voted to repeal access to affordable health care for families in this district. Jackie has what it takes to flip this seat from red to blue and will serve as a fresh voice for New Yorkers in Congress. EMILYs List is proud to be supporting this champion for working families.”
Jackie Gordon was born in Jamaica, West Indies, and her family came to the United States in pursuit of the American dream when she was seven years old. She has education degrees from Hunter College and Queens College, and is a guidance counselor at Wilson Technological Center in Farmingdale, where she has been mentoring and advising Long Island high school students for over 20 years. A combat veteran, Jackie enlisted in the United States Army Reserve as a college student and went on to serve until she retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2014. She was elected to the Babylon Town Council in 2006 and lives in Copiague with her son Augustus. Her daughter, Kerrianne, is a Captain in the U.S. Air Force.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 48,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
