EMILYs List Endorses Debbie Mucarsel-Powell for Congress in Florida’s 26th District
October 5, 2017
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed nonprofit health care leader Debbie Mucarsel-Powell in Florida's 26th Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Debbie's perspective and leadership is sorely needed in Washington, which is why EMILY's List is proud to stand with her. No stranger to hard work and commitment, Debbie came to this country as a young girl and started working at 15 to help support her family. She never stopped working – earning a scholarship to attend college and working to pay her way through graduate school. In her adult life, Debbie has devoted her career to nonprofit organizations that serve under-served communities, provide access to affordable health care, and address the effects of climate change. If elected, Debbie will keep working for those who need her most in Congress.
“This South Florida congressional seat is currently held by Carlos Curbelo, an extreme Republican who supports Donald Trump's dangerous agenda. EMILY's List put Curbelo 'On Notice' for voting to kick millions of people off their health insurance, defund Planned Parenthood, and undermine equal pay protections for women. Who knows what he could do next? Too much is on the line to stay home next November, like protecting women's health care and passing permanent DACA legislation. Debbie is just the type of fighter Florida's working families deserve representing their interests in Washington.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
