EMILYs List Statement: Protecting Economic Security Starts with Women

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The following is a statement from Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List:

“For over 30 years EMILYs List has been solely focused on electing pro-choice Democratic women because we know that if you want a more progressive America, start with women. As we have seen in this turbulent time, it is women who organized and came together to march by the millions to resist the massive rollback being led by the Trump administration. As Democrats, together we proudly laid out the most progressive platform just last year, including a stronger than ever stance on supporting women’s reproductive health access.  We know that one of the biggest economic decisions women can make is if and when to start a family. Our economic security and reproductive rights are not separate issues, but rather are integral to our families’ well-being. Women are the backbone of the Democratic Party and rolling back our reproductive rights is not who we are.”

EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained nearly 10,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
