EMILYs List Statement on Vice President Harris Selecting Gov. Tim Walz as Her Running Mate
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, in response to Vice President Harris naming Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to join her ticket as the vice presidential candidate, EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“Today, Vice President Harris continued to build on the strong momentum behind her campaign by naming Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate — creating the most pro-choice ticket in history. The Harris-Walz commitment to restoring our rights and defending our freedoms stands in stark contrast to the Trump-Vance ticket, which supports devastating abortion bans and would seek further control of our bodies and our lives. We are proud to be a part of their campaign for the White House.”
Highlights from Gov. Tim Walz’s record on reproductive freedom:
- Called on the U.S. Senate to codify Roe v. Wade protections into law.
- Issued an executive order the day after Roe v. Wade was overturned, allowing his administration to use all legal discretion to decline to extradite people who are charged under other states’ laws that criminalize providing or receiving abortion care.
- Signed the Protect Reproductive Options Act codifying the right to abortion and reproductive health care for all Minnesotans into law.
- Signed the Reproductive Freedom Defense Act protecting patients traveling to Minnesota for abortion care and the providers serving them from legal attacks and criminal penalties from other states.
- Supported putting a constitutional amendment protecting abortion rights in Minnesota on the ballot.
As vice president, Harris has led the strongest campaign for reproductive freedom in history. Highlights from her record on reproductive freedom include:
- Led the Biden-Harris administration’s response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, including implementing three executive orders protecting reproductive health care access.
- Rallied thousands of voters in the fight for reproductive freedom at nearly 100 events held in more than 20 states in the two years since Roe fell.
- Served as the first president or vice president to visit an abortion provider.
- Announced a nationwide blueprint for addressing the maternal health crisis and hosted the first federal Maternal Health Day of Action at the White House, where she issued a call to improve health outcomes for parents and infants in the United States.
- Advocated for women by co-sponsoring the Women’s Health Protection Act, unveiling a proactive plan to limit state-level abortion restrictions and leading the Maternal CARE Act while in the Senate.
- Specialized in crimes against women as a prosecutor and fought for Planned Parenthood as California attorney general.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
