EMILYs List Statement on Trump’s False and Racist Attacks on Members of Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Last night, President Trump doubled down on his racist lies attacking four Democratic congresswomen of color — including former EMILYs List candidates Reps. Ilhan Omar (MN-05), Ayanna Pressley (MA-07), and Rashida Tlaib (MI-13). In response EMILYs List President Stephanie Schriock released the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s racist attacks on these four congresswomen are vile. He has incited his base with hateful and divisive lies and last night’s rally — with shouts to 'send back' women who have fought to improve the lives of every day Americans — was chilling. These dangerous remarks are in clear contrast to the values of equality and inclusion that this country was built on. Racism and xenophobia should have no place in one’s political strategy, regardless of party.”
“Trump is not only trying to divide us, he is trying to distract from the success of Democrats in Congress and these women in particular. With the most diverse freshman class by race and gender in history, the Democratic led House has already passed more than 200 bills this year — from immigration to LGBTQ equality to prescription drug prices and more — that will improve the lives of millions of Americans. Meanwhile, Senate Republicans have only taken up a small fraction of these bills passed by the House. We cannot sit back and let these attacks continue; we stand with 'The Squad' and the amazing congresswomen who are proving every day that they love this country by doing the work in the House. It’s time to replace Republicans, and their hatred, with pro-choice Democratic women.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 46,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
