EMILYs List Statement on the Virtual 2020 Democratic National Convention

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the 2020 Democratic National Convention kicks off with the first-ever four-day convention online featuring many EMILYs List women candidates and elected officials who will be addressing voters across the country. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, released the following statement:

“This year EMILYs List has the opportunity not only to elect Kamala Harris as the first Black woman and the first Indian American woman as vice president, but to flip the Senate by electing more pro-choice Democratic women. I’m particularly excited that America is going to get to hear from some of these exceptional women this week, including many of our EMILYs List candidates and elected officials, who have been working tirelessly to combat COVID-19 in their communities.

Women, and especially women of color, are the largest coalition and voting block in the country, and they have single-handedly powered the Democratic Party’s gains throughout the Trump presidency. I’m beyond thrilled that these women will be able to share their passion, wisdom, and incredible energy to inspire voters nationwide to turn out in record numbers this November.”

In the 2020 cycle, EMILY's List is supporting 64 candidates for gubernatorial or federal office and nearly 400 women for state and local races, with more to come. EMILYs List’s women speaking throughout the DNC convention include: former Georgia House Minority Leader and 2014 EMILY's List Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award Winner Stacey Abrams, State Senator Raumesh Akbari (TN-SD29), Senator Tammy Baldwin, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, State Senator Yvanna Cancela (NV-SD10), former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former State Rep. Kathleen Clyde (OH-HD75), Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, Senator Tammy Duckworth, Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried, U.S. Senate candidate in Maine Sara Gideon, former Representative Gabrielle Giffords, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, Senator Kamala Harris, Senator Amy Klobuchar, State Rep. Mari Manoogian (MI-HD40), Representative Gwen Moore, State Rep. Victoria Neave (TX-HD107), Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Delegate Danica Roem (VA-HD13), Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

More speakers forthcoming. The convention will be live streamed at DemConvention.com

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 55,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
