EMILYs List Statement on the Confirmation of Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today the United States Senate voted to confirm President Donald Trump’s pick for the Supreme Court, Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch. In response, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“This is a dark day for women and families across the country. Justice Neil Gorsuch was such a radical pick that Mitch McConnell had to change the rules to push through his nomination – after months of unprecedented obstructionism over President Obama’s nomination of Judge Merrick Garland. No lifetime appointee should have been confirmed in this way, especially not one with Gorsuch’s alarming record, and who was nominated by an historically unpopular president whose administration is currently under FBI investigation.”
“The Supreme Court is the final line of defense against President Trump and the Republicans’ dangerous agenda for women and families. For McConnell to change the rules to push through a justice whom Trump promised would overturn Roe v. Wade gives us no indication Gorsuch will act as anything but a rubber stamp on the White House’s dangerous agenda. In the face of this extreme break from Senate tradition, our women will continue to stand up for those people who are being left behind by this new administration.”
EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained nearly 10,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
