EMILYs List Statement on Republican Party’s Abortion Platform

July 9, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday a Republican National Committee panel endorsed a platform that attempts to disguise the party’s extremist stance on abortion and agenda to pass a national abortion ban ahead of next week’s Republican National Convention. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:

“This platform on abortion is meant to trick voters — plain and simple. Republicans know they can’t win this election without deceiving Americans, so they are disguising their true agenda to ban everything from abortion to birth control to IVF. To be clear: By referencing the 14th Amendment, Republicans are laying the groundwork to enforce a national abortion ban through the courts. Voters won’t fall for it.

“Thanks to Donald Trump and his Republican allies, millions of Americans are already living without access to critical health care. And this horrifying reality will pale in comparison to a Republican-controlled White House and Congress. At EMILYs List, we know that the best way to protect and restore our rights is to reelect the Biden-Harris administration and elect more of the Democratic pro-choice women, like Vice President Kamala Harris, who will fight fiercely to restore the bodily autonomy that Donald Trump has stripped away from us.”

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
