EMILYs List Statement on Politically Driven Charges Against Rep. LaMonica McIver
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Last night, Donald Trump’s longtime personal lawyer and current U.S. Attorney for New Jersey announced federal charges against Rep. LaMonica McIver, following a group of Congressional Democrats’ visit to inspect the treatment of ICE detainees. Rep. McIver visited Delaney Hall, an immigration detention center in her district, to fulfill her oversight duties as a member of Congress. She was immediately met with hostility from armed and masked ICE agents on her visit. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement in response:
“Rep. LaMonica McIver was fulfilling her constitutional obligation as a member of Congress by conducting oversight in her district. These charges not only mischaracterize McIver’s actions; they are politically driven and antithetical to a real democracy.
“Donald Trump and his cronies are abusing the power of the federal government to target political opponents. These blatant intimidation tactics are a threat to the foundation of our democracy and our nation and must be called out. We stand with Rep. McIver and are grateful for her courage and her leadership.”
