EMILYs List Statement on New Hampshire Passing Dangerous Abortion Ban
Today, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu and the New Hampshire General Court pushed through the state’s budget, which includes a 24-week abortion ban with no exception for rape, incest, or fatal fetal anomalies. It also forces pregnant people to undergo mandatory ultrasounds and includes criminal and civil penalties for health care providers. The budget was approved by a 208-172 vote in the House and a 14-10 party line vote in the Senate.
Emily Cain, executive director of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Chris Sununu and every Republican member of the New Hampshire General Court who voted for this abortion ban have shown us who they really are: anti-choice extremists who believe they have the right to dictate reproductive decisions for patients and their families. This ban is dangerous, invasive, and has no basis in medical or scientific literature. In fact, over 200 members of New Hampshire’s medical community came out against the ban. Yet Chris Sununu and Republicans in the New Hampshire State House and Senate think they know better than the patients and providers and have the right to interfere in these immensely personal, emotional decisions. To them, the lives, health, and well-being of patients and their families are simply collateral damage.
“But Granite Staters are fighting back. From protests at the State House to letters of opposition, it is clear that the people of New Hampshire support reproductive freedom and won’t let the GOP take their rights away. It’s time to vote out each and every one of the anti-choice, anti-family, and anti-freedom legislators who voted for this ban. And it is time to replace Chris Sununu with a Democratic pro-choice woman who knows what is at stake and will never stop fighting for the right to control one’s own body.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 157 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
