EMILYs List Statement on Incumbent Governors Protecting Reproductive Freedom
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Supreme Court began hearing arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a case that lays the groundwork to overturn Roe v. Wade. With the unprecedented threat to abortion care, EMILYs List commends its incumbent governors who have vowed to stand up against efforts to undermine reproductive care. Laphonza Butler, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“EMILYs List is proud to stand with our incumbent governors who have vowed to act as the last line of defense against dangerous and extreme abortion bans in their states. We know that Republican-held state legislatures are sure to move quickly to implement abortion restrictions in their states if the Court overrules Roe v. Wade, but with Democratic pro-choice champions in the governors’ mansions, those attempts will be vetoed and reproductive rights will be protected. It is integral that we reelect Democratic women governors across the country to continue to stand up for those seeking reproductive care.”

“Today is a pivotal moment for women's rights as @SCOTUS meets to consider a challenge to Roe v. Wade. In New Mexico, we believe in the right for a woman to decide for herself whether to have an abortion and that's why we have protected access to reproductive health care,” tweeted Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM).
“Today, the Supreme Court is hearing one of the most significant challenges to a woman’s right to reproductive health care. I hope the Court reaffirms a woman’s right to choose, but if it does not, you can be damn sure that I will stand in the way of every and any threat to undermine, roll back, or outright eliminate access to reproductive health care here in Maine,” tweeted Gov. Janet Mills (ME).
“Right now the Supreme Court is hearing a case that seeks to overturn Roe v. Wade. New York stands with Mississippi women and all people across the country whose right to an abortion are being put at risk. We are here to be your safe harbor,” tweeted Gov. Kathy Hochul (NY).
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
