EMILYs List Statement on Immigrant Heritage Month
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The following is a statement from EMILYs List celebrating the beginning of Immigrant Heritage Month:
“This month is a time to celebrate the stories, traditions, and cultures that make our communities truly great,” said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List. “Now more than ever, we must all stand together and resist this president who rejects our country’s founding principles and outrageously prioritizes building walls and criminalizing entire faith-based communities. This month, we recognize and celebrate just how much new Americans have contributed to our nation — and we should also take this opportunity to speak louder and stand taller against Donald Trump’s cruel, un-American attempts to divide us. We stand with countless EMILYs List women, many who are immigrants themselves – including Sen. Mazie Hirono, Rep. Norma Torres, Rep. Stephanie Murphy, and Rep. Pramila Jayapal – who fight back against the toxic notion that some of our neighbors are less American than others.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained nearly 10,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
