EMILYs List Statement on Georgia Family Forced to Keep Daughter on Life Support Due to Abortion Ban

May 16, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, news confirmed that a Georgia family is being forced to keep their pregnant daughter, Adriana Smith — who was pronounced brain-dead over 90 days ago — on life support due to the state’s near-total abortion ban. Because of Republican extremism in the state, Adriana must stay on life support until the fetus is at least 32 weeks, leaving the family without the ability to consider any other options. This is not the first time in Georgia that the near-total abortion ban has caused harm to women — at least two women have died preventable deaths after they couldn’t access abortions and timely medical care in the state.

EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement in response:

Republicans treat women’s lives like collateral damage. We are not incubators, and our bodies, lives, and futures matter. Let’s be clear: Adriana’s family is experiencing a living hell because of Georgia’s extreme abortion ban. These tragedies are preventable and at EMILYs List we are not going to back down until we win this fight. That begins with ousting the Republicans who created this crisis, and replacing them with Democratic women who will fight tooth and nail to protect our rights, our dignity, and our lives.”
