EMILYs List Response to President Trump’s Budget

May 23, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, President Trump released his 2018 budget plan. Stephanie Schriock, EMILYs List President, issued the following statement:

“President Trump is failing the American people again – breaking promises he made to the working class by dismantling their economic security, depriving millions of health care, and shredding critical safety net programs for our nation’s most vulnerable. His budget severely cuts funding for Medicaid, after-school care, Meals on Wheels, child care for parents in college, among others; while recklessly focusing on building a wall and aiming to privatize public education. It also completely cuts Planned Parenthood out of all federal programming. No other president has gone this far in gutting programs for women and their families — eliminating federal funding for the organization’s efforts to combat Zika, prevent sexual assault through Violence Against Women grants, and even funding for cancer screenings.”

“This is yet another example of how out of touch President Trump and his GOP allies are and how little they care about investing in programs that would actually benefit American families. EMILYs List and our more than five million members are ready to stand up to Trump by electing more pro-choice Democratic women who are true champions for our families.”

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained nearly 10,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
