EMILYs List Recognizes National Census Day
Today, EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock released the following statement in recognition of National Census Day:
“The Census is so important and ensuring an accurate count in the 2020 Census is vital to our democracy. From its role in determining how billions of federal dollars will fund critical programs that keep people safe and save lives, to its impact on redistricting and political apportionment at the local, state, and federal levels, an accurate count in the census is essential to every community across the country. And particularly now, in the midst of a public health crisis which continues to take an unimaginable toll on countless health care systems, we are reminded how crucial this data is to our communities.”
“Federal funding for school lunch programs, Medicaid, hospitals, emergency preparedness, and more — areas that currently need significant support — are all allocated based on census data. These crucial programs improve all our lives and communities must have what they need to function every day, but especially during uncertain and difficult times. We’re proud of our pro-choice Democratic women at all levels of government who’ve continued to prioritize the census while handling the COVID-19 outbreak and are leading efforts to make sure every person, particularly children, immigrants, people of color, and other vulnerable communities, are protected and have a voice. On this Census Day, EMILYs List is committed to being a partner in the fight to ensure an accurate and fair count and looks forward to the positive change it will bring over the next 10 years when everyone has a voice.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 50,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
