EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock Announces Another Milestone: 30,000 Women Want to Run for Office

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women in politics, announced that they have heard from over 30,000 women who are interested in running for office since Election Day 2016. In response, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“This isn't a moment. It isn't a wave. It's a sea change. These 30,000 women are the next generation of leaders and candidates – and they will change the face of politics and power in this country forever.”

“These women want to fight back and make change. By marching, both last year and this past weekend, women came to know they weren't alone. The #MeToo movement demonstrated the power of our collective voice. The women-led opposition to the Republican health care bill showed we will not allow our rights to be ripped away. And the 2017 elections proved, beyond a doubt, that Democratic women can win elections. EMILY's List's goal in 2018, as it has always been, is to help them do just that.”

Schriock made this announcement last night on Comedy Central's “The Opposition With Jordan Klepper.”

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
