EMILYs List Joins Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes in Demanding the Immediate Swearing-in of Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson continues to refuse to swear in Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva, following her nearly 40-point victory in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District special election. Yesterday, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes sent a letter to U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson demanding the immediate swearing-in of Rep.-elect Grijalva, warning that failure to act promptly would result in legal action. The delay of her swearing in continues to deny representation to the constituents of Arizona’s 7th Congressional District. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“The refusal of Mike Johnson to swear in Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva is obstructionism of the worst kind – holding Arizona hostage to shield a reckless administration from the accountability Congress should be providing. Instead of fighting for Americans, protecting health care, or ending a government shutdown, Republicans are denying representation to hundreds of thousands of Arizonans.
“We applaud Attorney General Kris Mayes for standing firmly in defense of Arizonans’ constitutional right to representation when Republicans refuse to do so. Democratic women like Attorney General Mayes and Rep.-elect Grijalva are essential because they hold the line against Republican extremism and fight for what is right. Now do your job, Mike Johnson.”
