EMILY's List Endorses Two Women for Election in Maryland
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed two women for election in Maryland: Catherine “Katie” Curran O’Malley for attorney general and Brooke Lierman for comptroller. Laphonza Butler, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Katie Curran O’Malley and Brooke Lierman are running to ensure that all Marylanders have the opportunity to thrive and are well equipped for their post-pandemic recovery. EMILYs List is thrilled to stand with them. If elected attorney general, we know that former Judge Curran O’Malley will continue seeking justice for Maryland’s most vulnerable communities while also working to hold powerful interests accountable. As comptroller, Rep. Lierman will uplift every family, community, and small business in Maryland and will pay special attention to those who have been left behind. With these two women in office, we know Maryland will take great strides toward racial equity, transparency, and accountability.”
Katie Curran O’Malley was born in Baltimore, MD. She attended Towson University and the University of Baltimore School of Law. She worked as a prosecutor in Baltimore County where she focused on keeping communities safe and handling cases that dealt with domestic violence and substance abuse. She was appointed as a judge in 2001 by then Gov. Parris Glendening and served a 10-year term. She was reappointed twice before retiring from the bench to run for attorney general.
Brooke Lierman is a mother, disability and civil rights attorney, and a passionate legislator. She moved to Montgomery County, MD in middle school and graduated from Walt Whitman High School. She attended Dartmouth College and then spent years as a grassroots organizer. Rep. Lierman attended law school at the University of Texas School of Law while she fought for clients in need of better housing as part of the Legal Aid Fair Housing Clinic. She returned to Maryland and completed a clerkship in the U.S. Federal District Court in Baltimore and Greenbelt. In 2014, Lierman was elected to represent District 46 in the Maryland House of Delegates, and she was reelected in 2018.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
