WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Tina Smith for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Tina Smith is exactly the kind of leader and fighter Minnesota’s hardworking families deserve to have on their side representing them in the Senate. Tina’s experience in Minnesota — from her work protecting women’s access to care as a vice president of Planned Parenthood Minnesota and the Dakotas, to her success creating jobs, strengthening the economy, and expanding access to early education while serving as lieutenant governor in the state — immensely qualifies her for this role.
“Tina Smith will continue the long tradition of great Minnesota senators who have dedicated themselves to opportunity, fairness and improving the lives of working families – and the EMILYs List community is thrilled to endorse her campaign for Senate.”
Tina Smith is a champion for Minnesota working families running for the United States Senate to continue fighting for economic opportunity and fairness. Raised in a family with a strong tradition of public service, she volunteered for campaigns and causes and has served as vice president of Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. As Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota, Tina fought tirelessly to expand economic opportunity for all Minnesotans. She led a multi-billion dollar public-private partnership to create tens of thousands of good paying Minnesota jobs over the next 20 years, and she has championed policies to support job growth across the state—including the expansion of rural broadband access.
Tina is fighting to hold this critical seat in 2018 as control of the Senate hangs in the balance. She was appointed to this seat because she was ready to lead from day one, and she is working tirelessly to tackle the toughest problems facing hardworking Minnesotans.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to help more women run and win at the local, state, and national levels.
