EMILYs List Endorses Three Democratic Pro-Choice Women in Mayoral Races

June 11, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Boston Mayor Michelle Wu for reelection, Council President Helena Moreno for mayor of New Orleans, and Council President Mary Sheffield for mayor of Detroit. At a time when the Trump administration continues to attack our access to health care and create economic instability for working families, electing Democratic pro-choice mayors is critical. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statements to celebrate their endorsements:

“Mayor Michelle Wu has proven to be a fearless leader and a champion for the people of Boston, willing to stand up to the relentless attacks from the Trump administration. From affordable housing to early childhood education, and reproductive freedom, Mayor Wu has fought to make lives better for Bostonians every day and EMILYs List is honored to support her in this reelection.”

“Council President Helena Moreno has been a tireless advocate for the people of New Orleans, working to erase medical debt crippling families and address the impact restrictions on critical medication used in abortion care has had on maternal health. As states continue to battle rising Republican extremism, we are proud to stand with her as she fights for the people of New Orleans and makes history as the city’s first Latina mayor.”

“As the youngest person ever elected to the Detroit city council in 2013, Council President Mary Sheffield has continuously put the needs of Detroiters first. She has fought against discrimination in the workplace, worked to provide affordable housing, and been a staunch supporter of reproductive rights. EMILYs List is proud to support her in this race to become Detroit’s first woman mayor.”

EMILYs List proudly supported Moreno and Wu in previous citywide elections, recognizing their bold leadership and commitment to fighting for our freedoms. In 2018, EMILYs List nominated Mayor Wu for the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award. This year, if elected, Moreno would be the first Latina mayor of New Orleans and Sheffield would be the first woman to lead the city of Detroit.
