EMILYs List Endorses Three Democratic Pro-Choice Women for Election to the North Carolina General Assembly
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed three Democratic pro-choice women for election and reelection to the North Carolina General Assembly. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“While North Carolina Republicans continue to work overtime to restrict access to abortion, EMILYs List is proud to stand with Sen. Kandie Smith, Beth Helfrich, and Nicole Sidman, who will fight to defend our reproductive freedom. These pro-choice champions will stand up to the extremist GOP in the General Assembly — including state Rep. Tricia Cotham in the state’s 105th House District, who let her constituents and the cause of reproductive rights down by defecting to the Republican Party — and work to protect those rights and make North Carolina better. EMILYs List is proud to support them.”
EMILYs List endorsed the following slate of candidates for election and reelection:
- Kandie Smith, NC-SD05
- Beth Helfrich, NC-HD98
- Nicole Sidman, NC-HD105
Smith, Helfrich, and Sidman join eight other Democratic pro-choice women endorsed by EMILYs List for the North Carolina General Assembly this cycle: Lisa Grafstein (NC-SD13), Val Applewhite (NC-SD19), Woodson Bradley (NC-SD42), Evonne Hopkins (NC-HD35), Safiyah Jackson (NC-HD37), Diamond Staton-Williams (NC-HD73), Laura Budd (NC-HD103), and Lindsey Prather (NC-HD115).
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
