EMILYs List Endorses Tedra Cobb in New York’s 21st District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Tedra Cobb for Congress in New York’s 21st Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Tedra Cobb is a community leader who is prepared to stand up for North Country working families in Congress. She was inspired to run after Republicans, including incumbent Elise Stefanik, voted to cut rural health care and Medicaid funding for opioid addiction. When elected, Tedra plans to fight for quality, affordable health care and work toward bipartisan solutions to address the opioid epidemic. As a small business owner and former elected local official, she also cares deeply about creating a strong local economy and expanding economic opportunity for North Country families.
“Tedra is running against Rep. Stefanik, who has consistently voted for policies that would hurt women and families in the 21st District. In addition to supporting Republican attempts to take away health care from millions of Americans, Elise has also supported efforts to defund Planned Parenthood and has voted to undermine equal pay protections for women. Tedra is the champion that the people of North Country need fighting for them in Washington – and EMILYs List is excited to fight for her in the race to flip this seat.”
The daughter of a public school teacher, Tedra Cobb grew up in a family with a deep commitment to serving others. With the help of Pell grants, she earned her bachelor’s degree from SUNY Potsdam. Tedra then started a community health agency, securing federal and state funding to provide preventative screening and care to hundreds of hard-working North Country residents who could not afford health insurance. She stepped up to run for office for the first time in 2002 and was elected to two terms in the St. Lawrence County Legislature. After Tedra earned her master’s degree, she started her second business to help North Country businesses, nonprofits, hospitals, and universities achieve their goals. Tedra and her husband have lived in Canton for over 30 years and are proud to have raised their children in the North Country community.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
