EMILYs List Endorses Senator Jeanne Shaheen for Re-Election
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire for re-election. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Senator Jeanne Shaheen is a proven leader with a record of delivering results for New Hampshire families. She has led legislative efforts to extend unemployment benefits and help small businesses create jobs, maintaining her commitment to expanding economic opportunity in her home state. She is a fierce advocate for women’s rights and has been a strong voice fighting for survivors of military sexual assault. She’s worked hard to find bipartisan solutions that address the opioid crisis and provide life-saving resources for those with substance use disorder. Senator Shaheen’s dedication to improving Granite Staters’ lives is unmatched and unwavering.
“EMILYs List is proud to stand alongside Senator Shaheen as she runs for a well-deserved third term. Heading into 2020, we cannot take our eyes off the ball – New Hampshire remains a critical swing state for offices up and down the ballot. Senator Shaheen knows how to win tough fights and can count on our full support to send her back to the Senate.”
As the first woman in American history to be elected governor and U.S. senator, Senator Jeanne Shaheen is deeply committed to public service. The daughter of a shoe manufacturer and a church secretary, Jeanne taught high school and owned a small business before eventually running for New Hampshire state Senate, where she served for four years. She became the state’s first woman governor in 1997 and served three terms. After serving as governor, Jeanne led Harvard University's Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government as its director. She was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2008 and has been a strong voice for Granite State families in Washington since then. Jeanne and her husband live in Madbury and have three daughters and seven grandchildren.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million dollars and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 40,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
