FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos for election to Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“EMILYs List has been proud to support Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos since her run for Providence City Council in 2010, and we have been thrilled with all she has accomplished for Rhode Islanders in the years since. Matos has been a champion for women, youth, and working families, and she has been a strong supporter of reproductive freedom throughout her time in elected office. EMILYs List is thrilled to extend our support to Matos once again in her campaign to become the next representative of Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District.”
Sabina Matos is the 70th lieutenant governor of Rhode Island, an office she has held since 2021 when she was confirmed unanimously by the state Senate and later elected to a full term. Prior to serving as lieutenant governor, Matos was a Providence City Council member elected with the support of EMILYs List and was the first Latina to hold the position of city council president. She is also the second woman and first Afro Latina to hold the office of lieutenant governor, and she currently chairs the Emergency Management Advisory Council, the Long Term Care Coordinating Council, and the Small Business Advocacy Council. Matos immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic in 1994 and graduated from Rhode Island College with a bachelor’s degree in communications and public relations. Before serving in elected office, she worked in the nonprofit sector in Rhode Island, working with and strengthening small and midsize nonprofit organizations, particularly in the social service sector. Matos lives in Providence with her husband and their two children.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
