July 6, 2023

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Regina Romero for reelection as mayor of Tucson, Arizona. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“Mayor Regina Romero has been a champion for the people of Tucson and a leader in creating a more just and equitable city for all. While Republican extremists were busy stripping us of our reproductive freedom, Romero worked with the city council to protect abortion rights. It is more important than ever that we elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot who are committed to fighting for our freedoms, and EMILYs List is proud to once again support Romero so that she can continue to be a mayor that the people of Tucson can count on.”

Regina Romero has been mayor of Tucson, Arizona since 2019, when she was elected with the full support of EMILYs List. Before being elected mayor, she represented the people of Ward 1 as a city council member and was the first Latina elected to the Tucson City Council. During her time in elected office, Romero has championed a wide range of issues including environmental justice, equal pay for equal work, and citywide revitalization to bring high-wage, long-term jobs to Tucson. Romero also led the effort to pass paid sick leave for Tucson working families and helped develop the city’s response to the ongoing climate crisis. She is a proud first-generation American and Tucson’s first Latina mayor. Romero lives in Tucson with her husband, Ruben, and their two children.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
