EMILY's List Endorses Norma Torres for Re-Election in California's 35th District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Norma Torres for re-election in California’s 35th District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Norma Torres is a devoted community activist who has proven time and time again that she will fight for Southern California’s working families in Congress. In addition to introducing bills that create jobs and expand economic opportunity, Norma has been a champion for strong public schools, quality health care, support for veterans, and safer communities. She has dedicated her career to serving others. From her years as a 911 dispatcher to her time as mayor, to the halls of Congress, Norma has her finger on the pulse of the issues affecting her community.
“Norma is running against disgraced former Congressman Joe Baca, who is attempting to make yet another comeback in the District after switching parties. This seat is a critical one for us to keep a reliable Democrat in and Norma will receive EMILYs List’s full support in this must-win race for the majority. We are proud of Norma’s continued community advocacy, and are thrilled to stand with her as she continues fighting for hardworking Southern California families.”
A longtime resident of Pomona, Norma Torres immigrated to the United States from Guatemala when she was five and has dedicated her career to serving her community. Norma was inspired to run for public office while she was working as a 911 dispatcher and sought to address the lack of Spanish-speaking dispatchers in the role. After unseating a longtime incumbent on the Pomona City Council, Norma became the city’s first Latina mayor. She went on to serve in the California state Assembly and state Senate before she was elected to Congress in 2014.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
