FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Maria Cantwell for reelection to the United States Senate. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“Sen. Maria Cantwell is a champion for women and working families, and the legislation she has worked to pass has consistently improved lives for Washingtonians and all Americans. During a time when anti-choice extremism throughout the country threatens our rights, voices like Cantwell’s could not be more important. As a legislator and a leader, she is dedicated to protecting our freedoms and preserving our democracy, and EMILYs List is proud to endorse her campaign.”
Sen. Maria Cantwell is a proven leader running for reelection to continue serving the state of Washington and is one of the most committed progressive fighters in Congress. The second of five children, Cantwell grew up in a working-class family and paid her own way through college, becoming the first in her family to graduate. Cantwell began her political career working on a successful campaign in her Washington community to raise money for a new library building. At age 28, she successfully ran for a seat in the Washington State House of Representatives, and in 1992 she ran for the U.S. House of Representatives and became the first Democrat in 40 years to represent Washington State’s 1st District in Congress. She lost her seat in a GOP wave in 1994 and returned home to Seattle, where she became a successful technology entrepreneur, helping to build a company that created hundreds of jobs. In 2000, Cantwell launched her campaign for the U.S. Senate to challenge GOP Sen. Slade Gorton and defeated him by 2,229 votes. That year, Cantwell and Sen. Debbie Stabenow became the first women to defeat sitting U.S. senators in a general election. She was reelected in 2006, 2012, and again in 2018, and works tirelessly to create affordable opportunities for consumers, businesses and families, to make our nation more secure today, to foster innovation for tomorrow, and to stand with parents as they educate and care for their children.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
