EMILYs List Endorses Kathleen Williams in Montana's At-Large Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Kathleen Williams for Congress in Montana’s At-Large Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“I am so excited that EMILYs List is standing alongside my fellow Montanan Kathleen Williams in her fight to win this seat. She is the representative who Montanans deserve in Congress, whose track record serves as proof that she is committed to expanding and protecting access to affordable, quality health care. As a state legislator, not only did Kathleen champion health care, but she also fought to make taxes fairer for working families and expand economic opportunity. She has the leadership to do the same in Washington for Montana.
“Greg Gianforte has been an embarrassment to our state, having already pled guilty to assault in his first year in office. I plan to personally rally the entire EMILYs List community around Kathleen’s campaign and show her our full support in helping her flip this seat. Despite being the first state in the nation to elect a woman to Congress, Montana hasn’t been represented by a woman in Congress for 75 years and it’s long past time for us to send one back.”
As a three-term state representative, Kathleen Williams gained respect from colleagues on both sides of the aisle and distinguished herself as an ethical, effective legislator. Serving as vice chair of the agriculture committee, she emphasized the importance of local farming initiatives in Montana and used her expertise on rivers to inform decisions to protect Montanans’ water rights. Kathleen also served as vice chair of the House taxation committee, where she saw the importance of tax reform that helps expand economic opportunities for working families. Kathleen enjoys fishing, hunting, canoeing and cycling in Montana’s beautiful wilderness, which she wants to protect for public use. She has two grown step-sons and a German wirehair pointer named Danni.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
