EMILYs List Endorses Kate Gallego for Mayor of Phoenix

Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Kate Gallego for mayor of Phoenix, Arizona. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“Kate Gallego is proof that women in office get the job done. Time and time again, she has demonstrated her commitment to putting people before politics, prioritizing the improvement of Phoenix’s infrastructure and championing equal pay for equal work. A mother of a young son, Kate knows firsthand the challenges that women and working families face, and EMILYs List is confident that she will continue to invest in Phoenix’s future on their behalf. We are proud to endorse this fearless leader’s campaign for reelection.”

Prior to winning the special election for Phoenix mayor in 2019, Kate Gallego represented District 8 in the Phoenix City Council for five years. She is the third woman to become mayor of Phoenix, the first woman elected to the office in three decades, and at 38, the youngest big-city mayor in the country. As city councilwoman, Kate led the effort to implement equal pay for equal work by successfully passing Phoenix's equal pay ordinance and spearheaded efforts to end sexual harassment by instituting a standing policy for elected public officials citywide. During her tenure as mayor, she has prioritized strengthening Phoenix’s infrastructure, diversifying the economy, and working with police and firefighters to improve public safety and keep neighborhoods safe. Kate also leads the country’s largest city with a mom-majority city council which recently worked to add nursing stations to the Phoenix airport.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 50,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
