EMILYs List Endorses Jessica Cisneros in Texas’ 28th Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Jessica Cisneros for Congress in Texas’ 28th Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“EMILYs List is proud to support Jessica Cisneros, who represents the next generation of leadership in our country. A lifelong Texan and the daughter of Mexican immigrants, Jessica has witnessed firsthand the effect that our broken immigration system has on families like hers. As an immigration lawyer, she stands up and fights for families who want a fair opportunity to succeed – the same thing she will do for Texans when she’s in Congress.
“Jessica is running in a primary against Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar, who has cast anti-choice votes and whose conservative views are out of touch with his constituents. Jessica would be the first woman elected to represent Texas’ 28th Congressional District. EMILYs List looks forward to helping elect this champion for change whose fresh perspective and new voice will bring families in this district the representation they deserve.”
Born and raised in Laredo, Texas, Jessica Cisneros is the daughter of Mexican immigrants who came to the United States to start a new life for their family. Her father picked fruit and started his own trucking business in order to support their family. Jessica graduated as valedictorian from her high school and received her undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. A former intern for Congressman Cuellar, Jessica has been awarded the Texas Law Fellowships Excellence in Public Interest Award, the Pro Bono Award, and the Chicano/Hispanic Law Students’ Association’s Spirit of Community Award.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 48,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
