EMILY's List Endorses Heather Mizeur for Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Heather Mizeur to represent Maryland’s 1st Congressional District. Laphonza Butler, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“During times of deep division, Heather Mizeur has stepped up to help bring people together, and her congressional run is no different. Republican Rep. Andy Harris has promoted falsehoods about the 2020 election and has failed to hold insurrectionists accountable for their violence. Electing Heather Mizeur is the best way to ensure that the needs of Marylanders are prioritized over partisan politics. Mizeur has been ahead of the curve on health care reform, working in the legislature to enroll uninsured children in health plans. She’s also been a champion for the environment, government transparency, marriage equality, and justice throughout her career. Marylanders deserve a leader who will fight for their needs, not for the needs of a disgraced former president. EMILYs List is ready to work with Mizeur to flip this seat from red to blue and deliver meaningful results for the people of Maryland’s 1st District.”
Heather Mizeur is a policy expert, a former elected official, a farmer, and the founder and CEO of a non-profit organization focused on social justice running for Congress to continue her lifelong commitment to public service. She is the oldest daughter of a retired factory welder and member of the United Auto Workers. Labor strife and economic hardship as well as conversations about politics and civics were part of Mizeur family life. She served as U.S. Sen. John Kerry’s Domestic Policy Director for four years and was the principal architect of his 2004 presidential campaign’s health care reform agenda. She also worked for three Democratic U.S. House members, and spent four years as a national advocate for nonprofit community health centers serving the uninsured, rural families, and migrant farmworkers. Mizeur was elected to the Maryland General Assembly, and earned a reputation as a legislative powerhouse during the eight years she served in the House of Delegates. After leaving elected office, Mizeur founded Soul Force Politics, a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the worsening divisions in American politics and civic life. Mizeur and her spouse, Deborah, live on a 34-acre farm in Chestertown, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
