EMILYs List Endorses Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham for Reelection
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham for reelection in New Mexico. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Since her election as the nation’s first Democratic Latina governor, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has served as an outspoken advocate for New Mexicans, and EMILYs List is proud to endorse her for reelection. Under her leadership, New Mexico has been a national leader in the fight against COVID-19, and the state government has had one of it’s most productive periods in state history. From investing in quality public education to fighting to protect New Mexico’s natural resources to charting a clean energy economic future for her state, Michelle knows how to bring communities together to tackle tough issues. Alongside a new pro-choice majority in the state Senate, EMILYs List is confident that Governor Lujan Grisham will continue to expand women’s rights, and we are thrilled to stand with her.”
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is a dedicated public servant running for reelection to build on her life’s work of fighting for all New Mexico women and families. A proud 12th-generation New Mexican, Michelle ran for governor of this diverse swing state in 2018 and won, becoming the first Democratic Latina to be elected governor in U.S. history. In 2004, Michelle was appointed secretary of the Department of Health, New Mexico’s largest state agency, where she expanded the number of school-based health centers, banned junk food from schools, and instituted teen pregnancy prevention programs. After leaving state government in 2007, Michelle co-founded and worked as president of a successful small business to help to provide access to health insurance to New Mexicans who were denied coverage. She later won a seat on the Bernalillo County Commission, serving the state’s most populous county before winning an open seat in New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District in 2012 with the full support of the EMILYs List community. A three-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Michelle served as chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and is a powerful advocate for working families who don’t have a seat at the table.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 157 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
