EMILYs List Endorses Ellen Lipton in Michigan's 9th District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Ellen Lipton for Congress in Michigan’s 9th Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Ellen Lipton is a strong progressive who will fight for policies that improve economic opportunities for Michigan families. As a fierce advocate for educational opportunity and biomedical research, Ellen has what it takes to be the champion southeast Michiganders need in the House, building the foundation for tomorrow’seconomy. In the Michigan House, she was a fierce supporter of public schools, never forgetting her roots in a family of educators. Ellen’s commitment to helping others will make her a steadfast advocate for families of the 9th District.
“Ellen is running to replace retiring Rep. Sander Levin in a solidly blue district that has never been represented by a Democratic woman. Her expertise in education policy and firsthand experience opposing fellow Michigander Betsy DeVos’ destructive policies make her the ideal candidate to stand up for Michigan’s students in Congress. EMILYs List is proud to stand behind Ellen Lipton and we are looking forward to supporting her campaign.”
Ellen Lipton has been a powerful advocate for biomedical research to save lives, help families impacted by chronic illnesses, and create good-paying jobs in southeast Michigan. She currently serves on the Michigan Bar Association’s Special Committee on Access to Justice Policy, fighting for criminal justice reform. Ellen is dedicated to serving her state and community, and has served three terms in the Michigan state House.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
