EMILYs List Endorses Christina Hartman for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 16th District
December 5, 2017
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Christina Hartman for Congress in Pennsylvania's 16th Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Christina understands how critical it is that Pennsylvania's working families have a voice in Washington. She is the daughter of a teacher and a store manager who instilled in her values like hard work, love of community, and the importance of giving back. That is why Christina went on to lead nonprofit organizations that promote democracy abroad and then charitable organizations in her own community. She believes in rolling up her sleeves and doing what needs to be done to make people's lives better.
“This Lancaster County district is currently represented by first-term incumbent Lloyd Smucker, a man who has sought to throw millions of Americans off their health insurance, defund Planned Parenthood, cut taxes for the ultra-rich at the expense of the middle class, and limit access to reproductive health care for women. The people of the 16th District deserve better, and Christina has the experience and passion to deliver.”
When elected, Christina will fight for policies that create good-paying jobs and that balance the sustainability of central Pennsylvania’s proud agricultural traditions with economic growth. Christina is running against Republican first-term incumbent Congressman Lloyd Smucker, an extremist who has repeatedly sought to throw millions of Americans off their health insurance, defund Planned Parenthood, and to make working families pay for the ultra-rich’s tax cuts.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
