EMILYs List Endorses Carolyn Long in Washington’s 3rd District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Carolyn Long for Congress in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Carolyn Long knows what it’s like to work hard to make ends meet because she’s been there herself. She put herself through college by working a union job at a grocery store. Her hard work and education led her to where she is today: running to fight for southwest Washington’s working families in Congress. When elected, Carolyn plans to prioritize issues including affordable health care, prescription drug costs, and improvements to infrastructure.
“Carolyn is running in a rematch against Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, who narrowly held onto this seat last election. Herrera Beutler has consistently supported President Trump’s harmful agenda, voting to take away access to affordable health care and to defund Planned Parenthood. In 2018, Carolyn made this race more competitive than it had been in nearly a decade, and in 2020, EMILYs List has complete confidence that she will be able to win.”
Carolyn Long is an accomplished educator who has worked at Washington State University Vancouver for more than two decades as a tenured professor and in administrative and leadership positions. Growing up, Carolyn started working at her family’s small produce business when she was 12 years old to help make ends meet and worked her way through college with a union job at a grocery store. She went on to earn her Ph.D. in political science and has written two books on constitutional law. Carolyn lives in Vancouver, Washington with her husband and their daughter.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 46,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
