EMILYs List Endorses Betsy Rader in Ohio’s 14th Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Betsy Rader for Congress in Ohio’s 14th District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“After putting herself through college and law school, Betsy Rader dedicated herself to giving back to her community. She is a civil rights attorney, fighting to achieve greater equality and combat discrimination in the workplace. She's made access to legal services and health care two of her passions –always working to improve the world around her.
“Betsy’s opponent, on the other hand, has spent his time in Congress intent on ending health care access for millions of people and voting to defund Planned Parenthood –which earned him the endorsement of the National Right to Life group. David Joyce's record is clear: he's more concerned with satisfying the far right wing of his party than he is with fighting for working families. Betsy Rader understands the needs of this district, and will be a champion for women and children in Congress. EMILYs List is proud to endorse her.”
A lifelong Ohioan, Betsy Rader and her three siblings were raised by their single mother in a hardworking family that struggled to make ends meet after her parents’ divorce. With the help of scholarships, she worked her way through college at The Ohio State University, graduating first in her class, and went on to earn her law degree from Yale to become an advocate for northeast Ohioans. Betsy has served as the director or her county’s advocacy program for abused children, as senior counsel at the Cleveland Clinic, and as a fellow at the Innovation Center at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. She currently serves as a civil rights attorney fighting for Ohioans facing employment discrimination. Betsy and her husband are proud to have called Ohio's 14th District home for more than twenty years, and to have raised their three adult children in the community.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
