FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Amanda Edwards for election to Texas’ 18th Congressional District. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:

“Texas is at the epicenter of the fight to stop Donald Trump and Texas Republicans’ blatant political power grab, we need battle-tested leaders like Amanda who are ready to fight back. As a city leader and community advocate, Amanda knows first hand the needs of Houstonians, and stands on the front lines of the fight to lower costs, protect Texans’ access to health care and stand up to Donald Trump’s attempt to silence her community through gerrymandering. EMILYs List is proud to endorse her in this special election, and we look forward to supporting her through the finish line.”

Amanda Edwards is a native Houstonian, former at-large city council member, attorney, and founder of a community nonprofit who has dedicated her career to public service. From empowering women and seniors through hands-on work in her nonprofit to leading with bold, solutions-driven leadership, Edwards brings a deep and unwavering commitment to her community. As a city council member, Edwards led citywide efforts to cultivate technology, innovation, and public transit resulting in Houston’s new Innovation District — part of the recommendations stemming from the Tech and Innovation Task Force Amanda initiated and led. Edwards served as the vice chair of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Committee, authored numerous measures to ensure more accountability and good stewardship of the city’s limited resources, and helped lead budgetary sessions analyzing the city’s $5.1 billion budget. Edwards has also mobilized hundreds of volunteers to go door-to-door to render aid in the aftermath of serious disasters like Hurricane Harvey.  The fighter Houston needs, Edwards will fight tirelessly for reproductive freedom and to restore the rights of Texans’ who seek abortion care.
