EMILYs List Congratulates Yassamin Ansari on Her Election to Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District

November 5, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Yassamin Ansari on her election to Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:

“EMILYs List is proud to congratulate Yassamin Ansari on her groundbreaking election to the U.S. House of Representatives. She has an extensive public service track record that shows she will fight for Arizonans in Congress and deliver results for her community. We know she will work to protect our fundamental freedoms and we are honored to witness her victory.”

Today’s election will make Yassamin Ansari the first woman of color elected to federal office from Arizona and the first Iranian-American Democrat elected to Congress.

Ansari was raised in Arizona by immigrant parents who instilled in her the value of education and hard work at a young age. In 2014, Ansari began her career as an advisor in the Executive Office of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. She later went on to the Office of California Governor Jerry Brown as deputy policy director for the Global Climate Action Summit, and as a senior policy advisor to UN Secretary-General António Guterres. In 2020, Ansari ran for City Council to represent Phoenix’s 7th District. She was elected in March 2021 during a runoff election — making her the youngest woman to be elected to the council and the first Iranian-American elected to public office in Arizona. In 2020, Yassamin was recognized by Forbes as “30 Under 30” in Law & Policy, and in 2021, by the Phoenix Business Journal on their “40 Under 40” leader’s list.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
