EMILYs List Congratulates Yadira Caraveo on Her Victory in Colorado’s 8th Congressional District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Yadira Caraveo on her victory in Colorado’s 8th Congressional District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“Yadira Caraveo has been a groundbreaker for her entire life — putting herself through medical school, serving her community, and defending reproductive freedom. As the first Latina and first physician ever elected to Congress from Colorado, she is intimately familiar with the difficult medical decisions that families must make for themselves. And as a state representative, she knows exactly what is at stake if anti-choice extremists are allowed to make those personal decisions for Americans. Caraveo’s expertise in both fields will mean that the people of Colorado’s new 8th Congressional District will truly have a fighter representing them in Congress, and EMILYs List is proud to congratulate her on her groundbreaking victory today.”

Dr. Yadira Caraveo is a pediatrician and an accomplished legislator who ran for Congress to build on her life’s work of advocating for children and families. Dr. Caraveo’s parents came to Colorado from a small town in Mexico looking for a better life, and raised their four children on a construction worker’s pay in the Adams County home where they still live. Dr. Caraveo knew from an early age that she wanted to help people as a doctor. After attending public schools and completing her undergraduate education, she continued on to medical school at the University of Colorado and became the first physician in her family. Dr. Caraveo, who is fluent in Spanish, chose to be a pediatrician in Adams County. She proudly serves a Latino community whose families are often unable to find providers who speak their language and understand their culture. Dr. Caraveo quickly understood that the best way to help the most people is through the community, state, and national movements that advocate for the needs of the underserved, and so she ran for the Colorado General Assembly in 2018 and won. Despite a heavy workload advocating for Coloradans at the state capitol, Dr. Caraveo still works as a pediatrician, and even added extra weekend hours in order to see her patients while the legislature is in session during the week. As a pediatrician, a state legislator, and the daughter of immigrants, she will bring invaluable lived experience to Washington.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
