Kamala Harris

President
Kamala Harris

A proven leader and groundbreaker

Vice President Kamala Harris is a proven, accomplished leader who has spent her life breaking barriers, and she is committed to empowering others to do the same. She has been a vital partner to President Joe Biden in their work to create a record number of jobs, to make the most significant investment in infrastructure in our history, to pass meaningful gun safety legislation for the first time in decades, and to improve maternal health by expanding postpartum care through Medicaid. In her capacity as President of the Senate, she has cast the most tie-breaking votes of any Vice President in history. Her vote was decisive in passing the Inflation Reduction Act, the largest-ever investment in addressing the climate crisis. Vice President Harris also presided over the confirmation of  the first Black woman to the Supreme Court, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. In 2020, she made history as the first woman, the first Black American, and the first South Asian American to be elected vice president of the United States. She lives by the words her mother used to say to her: “Kamala, you may be the first to do many things, but make sure you are not the last.” Vice President Harris is the daughter of immigrants who were active in the civil rights movement, and after graduating from Howard University and earning a law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of Law, she was inspired to run for office to change the system from the inside. EMILYs List has endorsed Vice President Harris in previous races for local, state, and federal office, and is proud to endorse her for president of the United States.

A champion for the people

Vice President Harris has dedicated her life to fighting for justice and equality. When the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision ended a constitutional right for the first time in this country’s history, Vice President Harris was ready to serve as a powerful advocate for abortion rights across the government and across the country.  The day after the Dobbs decision was leaked, Vice President Harris joined the EMILYs List community at our annual gala and said: “Those Republican leaders who are trying to weaponize the use of the law against women — well, we say, ‘How dare they!’” As both the first woman vice president and as an elected official and lawyer who spent her career working to expand reproductive rights, she is uniquely positioned to lead on the administration’s response to Republicans and the courts trying to eliminate access to abortion, IVF, contraception, and other reproductive health care. EMILYs List also endorsed Vice President Harris in each of her previous offices, as San Francisco district attorney, California attorney general and United States senator. As the first woman to serve as attorney general in California, Vice President Harris held big banks accountable during the housing crisis, fought for marriage equality and LGBTQ+ rights, and established the first Bureau of Children’s Justice. As only the second Black woman and first Indian American woman elected to the United States Senate, Vice President Harris served on the Intelligence and Judiciary Committees. In the Senate, she fought to raise awareness of and pass legislation on issues ranging from maternal health care, to protections for DREAMers, to the climate crisis, to supporting historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

Essential continued leadership

EMILYs List is proud to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States. She has been a leader and powerful advocate on issues ranging from voter protections to workers’ rights, gun violence prevention to climate change, racial justice to foreign policy, a history-making leader who has secured significant accomplishments for voters across the country. Her continued leadership is essential in this pivotal moment for our rights and for our future. “This November, reproductive freedom is on the ballot,” Vice President Harris has said. “And you, us — collectively and individually — have the power to protect those rights.  It is your power that will help us win a pro-choice majority in the United States House of Representatives. It is your power that will help us defend a pro-choice majority in the United States Senate. And it is your power that will send Joe Biden and me back to the White House. And when Congress passes a law that restores the reproductive freedoms of Roe, our president, Joe Biden, will sign it into law.” Trump and his allies will go as low as they can to attack her, but Vice President Harris has the resilience, experience, and moral clarity to fight back and win. Let’s show her the full support of the EMILYs community, and ensure that Vice President Harris continues her work for the people as our next president.
