November 5, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates state Sen. Sarah McBride on her election to Delaware’s At-Large Congressional District. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:

“EMILYs List congratulates state Sen. Sarah McBride on her history-making victory to the U.S. House. As this district passes from pro-choice champion Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester to McBride, Delawareans will have their access to reproductive freedom protected at the federal level by another passionate and dedicated trailblazer. McBride has a proven record of advocating for women, children, families, the LGBTQ+ community, and marginalized groups across the country, and we are excited to see what she can accomplish as she continues her fight in Congress.”

Sarah McBride was elected to represent Delaware’s 1st state Senate District in 2020 with the support of EMILYs List, making her the first openly transgender state senator in American history.

As a state senator, McBride has worked successfully to pass legislation expanding health care access, improving public education, and providing paid family and medical leave. Prior to serving in the state Senate, McBride was the national press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign and a leading activist in the effort to pass non-discrimination protections in Delaware. She has also previously taught public policy at the University of Delaware and authored a 2018 memoir, “Tomorrow Will Be Different,” for which President Joe Biden wrote the foreword.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
