EMILYs List Congratulates Maggie Hassan on Advancing to the General Election in New Hampshire’s Senatorial Election
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Sen. Maggie Hassan on advancing to the general election to determine who will serve as New Hampshire’s next senator. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“Sen. Maggie Hassan has faithfully served the people of New Hampshire for over 15 years, as a state senator, as governor, and now as their U.S. senator. Her love for her community and her commitment to bettering the lives of Granite Staters shines through everything she does — and in an election where her radical anti-choice opponents would take away Americans’ fundamental most freedoms and vote for a national abortion ban if elected, reelecting Sen. Hassan could not be more important. EMILYs List is thrilled to congratulate Sen. Hassan on her victory today, and we look forward to helping ensure that an anti-abortion extremist will never represent the people of New Hampshire in the Senate.”
Sen. Maggie Hassan was elected to represent New Hampshire in the United States Senate in 2016. She got her start in public service by advocating to ensure that children like her son Ben, who experiences severe disabilities, would be fully included in their communities and have the same opportunities that all parents want for their children. Hassan, an attorney, went on to serve for three terms in the New Hampshire state Senate and as the 81st governor of New Hampshire, fighting to expand opportunity for all Granite Staters. She is the second woman in American history to be elected both governor and United States senator, along with fellow New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
