November 5, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Julie Johnson on her election to Texas’ 32nd Congressional District. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:

“EMILYs List congratulates Julie Johnson on her groundbreaking election to Texas’ 32nd Congressional District, making her the first openly LGBTQ+ congressional member from Texas. Johnson is a tireless advocate for marginalized voices and working families. We are overjoyed that Texans recognized her unmatched legislative record and her capacity to create change in Texas. We can’t wait to see all that she accomplishes in Congress.”

Julie Johnson is a member of the Texas House of Representatives. She is a Texas-educated attorney who has spent her legal career defending workers, advocating for students, and breaking barriers for women and the LGBTQ+ community. When she was elected in 2018, Johnson made history as one of the first two openly gay elected officials in Dallas County. Her powerful voice and tireless work ethic helped her to defeat 76 out of 77 anti-LGBTQ+ bills that Republicans introduced to the Texas House in the last legislative session. In the state House, she has focused on consumer protection, health care, and fighting against the dangerous abortion bans that Texas Republicans have imposed throughout the state. Johnson has been married to her wife, Susan, since 2014.

EMILYs List endorsed Johnson for Texas state House in 2018, 2020 and 2022.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
