EMILYs List Congratulates Gov. Kathy Hochul on Advancing to the General Election in New York’s Gubernatorial Election
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Gov. Kathy Hochul on advancing to the general election in New York’s gubernatorial election. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“As the first woman to serve as New York’s governor, Gov. Kathy Hochul has taken bold and decisive action to deliver results for the people of New York. Since taking office she has steered the state through the pandemic and into economic recovery while fighting to protect the rights and freedoms of New Yorkers – from expanding access to the ballot box, creating safer communities and curbing gun violence, to defending the rights of people to access abortions and determine their own futures. EMILYs List is proud of Gov. Hochul’s Democratic pro-choice leadership and thrilled to congratulate her on advancing to the general election.”
Gov. Kathy Hochul is a dedicated public servant with a distinguished track record of advancing justice and equity across New York. A lifelong New Yorker, she became the 57th governor of New York in 2021. She previously served as an Erie County Clerk from 2007 to 2011 and a member of the Hamburg Town Board from 1994 to 2007.
She also served in the U.S. House of Representatives, and has served in statewide office since 2014. As governor, Hochul has taken decisive action to deliver immediate relief to working class families and small businesses, to combat the pandemic, and to fight for New York’s economic recovery. She has also ensured that New York remains a national leader on reproductive rights and climate change. She is married to her husband, Bill, with whom she has two children.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
