WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following Council President Mary Sheffield’s decisive first place finish in Detroit’s mayoral primary election, EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:

“EMILYs List is proud to congratulate Council President Mary Sheffield on an impressive first place finish in Detroit’s mayoral primary. Mary’s proven record of delivering for the people of Detroit and her on-the-ground approach to solving the challenges facing the city make her the strongest candidate in this race. We’re excited to work to elect Mary to be Detroit’s first woman mayor in November.”

Mary Sheffield is a native Detroiter with a demonstrated track record of service, empowerment, and leadership in the Detroit community. She currently serves as the city council president — the youngest person ever to be elected — and has earned widespread admiration for her unwavering commitment to uplifting her constituents and fostering positive change. During her tenure, Council President Sheffield has had one of the most historic and impactful legislative careers in the history of the Detroit City Council — fighting tirelessly against discrimination in the workplace and providing affordable housing. She has been a staunch supporter of reproductive rights. In 2024, she was named one of the Michigan Chronicle’s 2024 Power 50 Leaders and received the Black United Fund’s 2024 Black Excellence Award.
