EMILYs List Congratulates Abby Finkenauer on Her Victory in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated EMILYs List candidate Abby Finkenauer on being elected to represent Iowa’s 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“Abby Finkenauer is a lifelong Iowan who has spent her career expanding educational opportunities, defending workers’ rights, and fighting for women’s equality. Abby was just 24 when she was elected to the Iowa state House, where she was a leader in the fight to defend women’s reproductive health care and create economic opportunities for all working families. Her victory means that the women and families of Iowa’s 1st District will have a true ally fighting for them in Congress. EMILYs List is proud to congratulate Abby on a well-deserved victory as she flips this seat from red to blue and becomes the first woman to represent the state of Iowa in the U.S. House.”

Women Vote, EMILY's List's independent expenditure arm, spent nearly $180,000 on a robust mail program in support of Abby Finkenauer’s historic bid for Congress. Women Vote also contributed to MoveOn.org’s Real Voter Voices digital campaign supporting Abby Finkenauer.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
