EMILYs List Celebrates Labor Day

September 5, 2023

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Observed on the first Monday in September, Labor Day has been recognized as a federal holiday honoring the contributions of American workers, their unions, and trade organizations since 1894. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement celebrating the holiday:

“For over 120 years, Labor Day has been a celebration of the American worker, the strength of the unions, and trade organizations proving that together we can challenge the status quo and make our lives better. It is a reminder of the power we harness when we work toward equity, and hold accountable those who stand in the way of our vision for a better future. For teachers, caregivers, skilled tradesmen, and artists, today is also a celebration of their contributions in our communities, an acknowledgement of the achievements of those whose work is often overlooked but is integral to the foundation and continued success of our nation.

“At a time when workers all across the country are calling out pay disparities and are striking for fair treatment, EMILYs List is proud to support the Democratic pro-choice women at every level of government who stand with them. Leaders who are not only demanding a seat at the table but who are doing the work – introducing legislation that seeks to raise wages, protect workers safety, and break down barriers to form a union. EMILYs List is proud to continue to prove that a vote for women who fight for fundamental freedoms like voting rights and abortion rights is a vote for leaders who fight for all rights and who will continue to do the work to improve the lives of working families and build our nation’s middle class.”

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
