EMILYs List Announces Senator Elizabeth Warren as Keynote Speaker for 2017 “We Are EMILY” Gala
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, announced that Senator Elizabeth Warren will keynote their “We Are EMILY” Gala on May 3rd, the organization’s annual event highlighting the work of pro-choice Democratic women across the country.
“At a time in which millions of women across the country are standing up, fighting back, and running for office themselves, we are honored to have Senator Elizabeth Warren join us this year,” said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List. “Elizabeth has time and again proven herself to be a tireless advocate for women and all Americans, and one whom we are proud to count among our ranks of extraordinary EMILYs List candidates. From standing up for working families against corporate interests, to advocating for students trying to afford college, to fighting back against a Republican Party laser-focused on turning back the clock on women’s rights, she has never backed down from fighting for justice and our democratic values.”
“Even Republicans know Elizabeth doesn’t give up – she persists,” continued Schriock. “Elizabeth is a true model for the resistance efforts of the countless women across the country who are leading the fight against this administration and the Republican Party. No matter how hard extremists try to silence her, we know that Elizabeth will never back down – and neither will the millions of women who follow in her footsteps.”
“EMILYs List is on the front lines of the fight against the extremism we’re seeing in the White House and from Republicans across the country,” said Senator Elizabeth Warren. “I am proud to join them in this celebration and to stand by their side as they continue their critical work electing strong Democratic women to office. When I first ran for office in 2012, the EMILYs List community was with me every step of the way, and I know they’re not one to back down from tough fights. We know there are battles ahead of us – but this movement of millions is just getting started.”
As a legal fellow nearly 20 years ago in Texas, Elizabeth received some mail from EMILYs List – and by sending a small check she performed her first political action that went beyond voting – and became a member of the EMILYs List community. Years later, as a Harvard Law School professor, she had risen to national prominence and had written influential books on personal finance. As she considered launching a campaign for U.S. Senate against Republican incumbent and Tea Party hero Scott Brown, EMILYs List President Stephanie Schriock, knowing that women and families in Massachusetts needed Elizabeth’s leadership, helped her decide to run over iced tea at Elizabeth’s kitchen table. From day one of her campaign, the EMILYs List community gave her our full support, helping power her successful bid to become the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts – and we will continue standing with her as she runs for re-election in 2018.
Further details about the conference and gala, including nominees for EMILYs List’s annual Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star award, conference panelists, and additional high-profile speakers to come.
EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained nearly 10,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
